Top 10 Adult-Only Oases

Flip the script on the classic treehouse sign: No Kids Allowed. Here are some of our staffers’ favorite places to hide without being sought, because sometimes, running away is the most grown-up solution.

Palafitos—amor mios!

This Gourmet Inclusive® resort has a lot going for it—128 suites, to be exact, serviced by six restaurants, five bars, and set around three pools. But the biggest star of this adults–only study in luxury is undoubtedly the overwater bungalows, the stunning Palafitos that hover above gleaming seas. A glass insert in the actual floor of each building adds yet another feature to bring childlike wonder to adult faces, and evening fun like karaoke, live music, and a circus show will have you laughing like one, too.

But don't worry. There are plenty of features that bring out the more mature, posh side of us. A welcome glass of sparkling wine and a stocked mini–bar start you off right; Spanish lessons, yoga, aqua aerobics, Latin dance lessons, cooking classes, shopping tours to nearby Playa del Carmen, and the outstanding Náay Spa have you leaving better than when you arrived.

It’s no “occident” that this resort made our top picks …

Now part of the Barceló family, this Costa Rican coastal gem is a must for couples who want a beach escape a bit off the beaten path. All 163 guestrooms here have a balcony or terrace to themselves to keep even your outdoor space private. Premium level guests also get to luxuriate in long, hot whirlpool baths in their room, nightly turndown, bumped–up drink service, and a special check–in/–out at the Lounge Bar.

As far as shared spaces go, three restaurants and four bars service all guests with all–inclusive goodies, and adding on a spa treatment at U–Spa is worth considering. A Vichy shower, Turkish bath, and a litany of treatments are only part of the reason why. Earn that extra at the fitness center, kayaking, snorkeling, or dancing until 2 AM in the disco … or however you want to get in touch with pura vida.

Enjoying adulthood doesn’t have to be “complex” … or DOES it?

It's totally up to you at this sumptuous resort, whose neighbors include the Grand Palladium Palace Resort, Grand Palladium Punta Cana, and Grand Palladium Bavaro. Visit any of these and their five buffets, eight á la carte restaurants, and 22 bars with your exchange privileges … or keep it simple in the two exclusive TRS restaurants, four TRS Hotel VIP area bars, seven TRS–only pools, and a private beach.

There are hundreds of deluxe and royal junior suites, a dozen romance suites, 15 royal honeymoon suites, 16 cabana ones, and a royal presidential one, too, if you want to get complex again, though. Plus, activities and games at the pool and beach, entertainment and live music at the theater and discotheque, excitement at the casino, and the shared Zentropia spa make sure you're not starved for choice.

Class in Los Cabos

All Secrets Resorts & Spas put sultry romance at the forefront ("Make a Secret," anyone?), but this Spanish Mediterranean property makes sure it's in every detail of the backdrop as well. Each of its 500 enormous suites has a whirlpool, private and furnished terrace or balcony, and finishing touches that have earned this resort AAA Four Diamond status. Preferred Club stays come with upgraded mini–bar service and bath amenities, concierge service, private pool, exclusive breakfast service at an additional restaurant, and a lounge filled with more treats.

As far as playtime goes, there are weekly theme parties, movie screenings on the beach, yoga and Pilates classes, a Cabo art walk, cooking lessons, and three miles of quiet, secluded beach for long walks. For a much shorter walk: eight restaurants, four bars, two pools, and a 13,000–square–foot Secrets Spa by Pevonia. Trust us—you won't miss the pitter–patter of little steps!

Leave the princes and princesses at home for this Palace.

The royal family plays second fiddle to kings and queens at this 62–room couples–only resort on a secluded island off the coast of Mexico near Cancun. A complimentary sea ride to the property makes the getaway even more of one, whisking adults away to a red wine greeting and romantic touches like private hammocks, thatched–roof bars, and in–room whirlpool tubs for two. Also in every room: nightly turndown, CHI products, a fully stocked mini–bar, and 24–hour room service.

But you want to come up for air, to take advantage of its two restaurants, bar, and frequent resort credit offers that provide up to $1,500 worth of added romance. We suggest using that for spa treatments since the karaoke and fire shows, non–motorized water sports, and top–shelf cocktails are already part of your stay.

Feel like a “don” with the Don Pablo Collection.

Kick back and relax like a boss at this laid–back luxury property overlooking a bay on Dominican Republic's southeastern side. You'll be the master of its domain here, because although it's adjacent to the Grand Bahia Principe La Romana, the exchange privileges are one–sided; only dons get to go back and forth for access to nine restaurants, including options just for guests of the 414 rooms of this adults–only resort.

Other ways to enjoy the kid–free quiet? Well, two pools and the Bahia Spa are smart choices during the day, and complimentary entry to the Bachata nightclub light up the sultry Dominican nights. Nightly turndown service, a long beach for strolling, a pretty dock for private dinners and sunsets, and easy day trips to nearby islands help to make this among the most romantic hotels in the area.

Party in privilege here, where the action doesn’t have to stop.

… And why should it? Whether in one of the five–story 150 suites or outside of them, there are dozens of details designed to awaken your senses and get you in the mood to have a fabulous time. Over half of the rooms offer butler service, which includes evening petit fours, served drinks and lunch waterside, nightly turndown, and even assistance with packing. Step out, and you have parties like the RunWay fashion show; glow, steel pan, silent disco, and Jamrock reggae parties; and Circus in Town. And for lower–key nights, seven restaurants and five bars are always ready for you.

An added bonus? Change the scene—but not the adults–only theme—by taking advantage of the Sip, Savor & See Dining Experience program with next–door Secrets Wild Orchid and Secrets St. James Montego Bay, or booking a day at their spas. All three sister properties are on their own peninsula, making this enclave not only just for grown–ups, but also just for you.

Grown up, scaled up, and right up our alleys.

Elegance endures here in this 201–room resort, whose on–site venues include five restaurants and four bars … and justslightly off–site privileges add in 23 other restaurants and a dozen more bars at sister resorts Pueblo Bonitos Sunset Beach, Los Cabos, and Rose.

But just at Pacifica alone, there's already wine–tasting seminars with an award–winning sommelier; mixology and tequila tastings; private beach privileges; and exclusive access to the Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course at Quivira Golf Club, whose layout offers more oceanfront exposure than any other course in the destination. After a round, chillax at Armonia Spa, one of the top five in the world as voted by Condé Nast Traveler, then kick back at "home" in your private balcony with your daily restocked mini–bar and personal butler service in suites. We're going to go ahead and vote on this: with so much luxury to take advantage of here in the Quivira Los Cabos enclave, better make it an extended stay!

Rendezvous are required with this much romance.

Fewer than 100 rooms leave plenty of room for imagination at one of the "Top 100 Resorts of the World" and "Top 10 Best Resorts for Romance in the Caribbean" (according to TripAdvisor). Live entertainment and a weekly cocktail party and Caribbean barbecue night, plus four restaurants and bars, are some of its social aspects, but couples love that the nearly mile–long white–sand beach—part of 40 acres that also include a natural bird sanctuary—and available private dining right on it are an invitation to indulge in cliché … as is the Indulge Spa on site.

The accommodations, on the other hand, are anything but expected. Sure, you have the Beachfront Rooms that get you from bed to beach in steps, and Premium Beachfront Suites, which step it up with corner soaking tubs, his–and–hers showers, Gilchrist & Soames toiletries, and other upgraded amenities. But it's hard to beat the Gaugin Suites for uniqueness. Lagoonside cottages, each with two rondovals, concealed plunge pools, private sundecks, and outdoor showers sound pretty perfect to the grown–ups we asked, don't you think?

In a land of EP, an adults-only AI palace wows.

Perfect weather, perfect shores, and here, the perfect all–inclusive option for adults only. Its 482 junior suites were made just for those over 18 … as are its amenities. Nearby golf. Complimentary scuba diving lesson. Free entry to the discotheque. Access to the casino. An on–site Renova Spa. Even a welcome glass of cava. They're all among the grown–up–friendly features this resort offers, as well as five bars and four restaurants.

Need more? You'll be able to extend your royal treatment to the Riu Palace Aruba as well—also on Palm Beach. There, you've got five more dining venues to choose from. And never you mind that this sister property has a kids pool and is family–friendly—you're free to come and go as you please, to retreat back to your adults–only domain. Just the way you like it.
